The Five Best New SUVs

SUVs have become wildly popular over the last couple of decades, to the point that almost every auto manufacturer has their own distinct SUV on the market. With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down the one that is best for you. Whether you’re looking for reliability, powerful performance, or the latest technology, you can’t go wrong with one of these five new SUVs.

The X5 was one of the first luxury SUVs on the market. The exterior design of this SUV hasn’t changed very much over the years, but the newest model has seen significant improvements in the car’s handling and steering. The X5 has three options for powerful drivetrains with eight-speed automatic transmission. The base model has a turbocharged I6 engine and 335 horsepower, while an upgrade will get you a twin-turbo V8 with 523 horsepower. You can also go green with a plug-in hybrid that features an I6 electric motor and 389 horsepower.

The CX-9 offers a driving experience that is more fun than many other SUVs. You have the choice of FWD or AWD, and all versions of this SUV are equipped with a turbocharged I4 engine. The CX-9 has great handling and performance, particularly when it comes to steering and cornering. The interior of the vehicle is attractive and features soft-touch plastic, brushed aluminum, and rosewood accents. The third row can get a little squishy for passengers but, overall, the CX-9 is a great mid-size SUV.

The Telluride was one of the most popular SUVs of the year due to its impressive performance on and off-road. Equipped with a V6 engine that gives it 291 horsepower, the Telluride is durable and strong enough to pull a 2,268-kilogram (5,000-pound) trailer. It comes with FWD, but AWD is also available. In addition to great handling and performance, the Telluride is popular for its luxurious interior that features leather trim and dual 12-inch touchscreens. People also love the spacious cabin which can easily fit seven passengers and all their gear.

The XC90 has lots of safety tech and a spacious cabin that makes it an ideal option for families. Compared to other SUVs, the XC90 provides one of the smoothest, most comfortable rides but passengers in the backseat might feel a little cramped. Base models are equipped with a turbocharged I4 engine and 247 horsepower, but you can upgrade to a plug-hybrid that has 400 horsepower. Regardless of which drivetrain you choose, the XC90 is a fun SUV to cruise around in.

Chevrolet Suburban

The Suburban is one of the largest SUVs on the market and one of the most popular for its ability to accommodate large families and tow heavy loads. In addition to lots of passenger and cargo space, the interior features cool technology like an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, and heated seats. The Suburban is one of the more powerful SUVs on the market and comes equipped with a V8 engine and 420 horsepower. This SUV has impressive off-road capabilities, and, despite its size, is surprisingly agile. All in all, the Suburban exemplifies the best qualities of an SUV and is a great option if you’re looking for a new vehicle.

Frustrated woman in a driveway with a car in winter, holding a remote start keyfob

The free trial for my new car’s remote start subscription expires right before winter. Is there any other way that I can activate it?

Car companies can now remotely shut off a factory remote-start feature if you stop paying for their subscription, even if it's built into your car. This is official policy of many large automakers, but there are still options for subscription-weary consumers.

Shocked by the Repair Invoice

I Bought A Vehicle Because It Had Great Safety Ratings, But Repair Costs After A Minor Collision Shocked Me. Is That Normal?

They tell you valuable things about occupant protection and crash avoidance, but they do not promise that the vehicle will be inexpensive to repair. A modern car can perform brilliantly in a severe crash and still produce a painful bill after a parking-lot collision.

Frustrated Driver Inspecting Windshield Crack

My Windshield Keeps Cracking From Tiny Rocks, And Replacing It Has Become Incredibly Expensive. Are Modern Windshields More Fragile?

Modern windshields carry more technology and cost much more to replace than the simple panes many drivers remember. That does not automatically make the glass more fragile, but it makes every crack feel considerably more painful.

Frustrated Driver at Sunrise

My car’s over-the-air update changed the dashboard layout overnight. Can automakers alter controls after I buy the vehicle?

Over-the-air software lets automakers change interfaces and vehicle functions months or even years after a car leaves the showroom. That capability can bring useful improvements, but waking up to unfamiliar controls also raises legitimate questions about consent, safety, and what exactly you bought.

Shocked Driver on Snowy Road

I bought an all-wheel-drive vehicle expecting better winter handling, but stopping distances still surprised me. What did I misunderstand?

It can make a vehicle launch confidently through snow that leaves a two-wheel-drive car struggling, but that confidence can disappear the moment you hit the brakes. The missing piece is that AWD primarily helps you accelerate, while stopping still depends overwhelmingly on the grip available between four tires and the road.

My Neighbor’s EV Charger Cable Crosses The Sidewalk In Front Of Our Condo Every Night. Is That Something I Should Report?

Charging an EV from a home to a curbside parking space can be legal in some cities, but authorities generally expect the sidewalk to remain safe and accessible for everyone using it. Before filing a complaint, determine whether the cord is using an approved crossing method or simply lying loose across the walking path.
